Lotus Cafe is totally focused on local, organic and quality food preparation using the highest quality natural food ingredients. This is a far cry from what you would expect to find in a school lunch.
But take a trip up to Hualalai Academy and be surprised. They offer school lunches prepared by Lotus Cafe for their students and staff, Unlike any other school lunch you or your family has ever eaten, lunches by Lotus are delicious, nutritious and affordable.
Our cafe has a huge following of people who appreciate the quality of what we serve. The students and staff at Hualalai Academy are just like everyone else. About 18 months ago we started to do school lunches for Hualalai Academy . While Lotus Cafe serves basically Northern Thai, Indian and Indonesian cuisine, we have a special menu of dishes for Hualalai Academy that appeal to a large number of their students. Our most popular dishes are our chicken fried rice served with fresh local fruit and cucumber slices, Thai style barbequed chicken with sauted vegetables and mango salsa over organic brown rice, and a delicious pad Thai noodle with lots of fresh vegetables. We also offer organic chips and garlic chicken, fruit salads with toasted fresh coconut. For beverages, we make dcelicious fruit flavored lemonades, smoothies with organic soy milk and fresh fruit, (either mangoes or bananas) or pure fruit juices. The focus is on local, fresh and healthy Yummy.
While the menu is set at the beginning of each month, the school calls us each day to verify the quantities. They also tell us of any special requests like raw salads or vegetarian substitutes, which we are happy to do at no extra charge.
Of course we use only compostable containers, napkins and cutlery. Our food is always cooked at the last possible hour fresh and served on time, and always still warm. Basically, we go the extra mile in every way possible to make our lunches the best tasting, most nutritious meals and keep the prices reasonable while serving large portions.
Smaller lunches for K-3 student are 4.50 and our larger Grade 4-12 lunches are 7.50. These include 8 oz smoothies or fresh fruit juice.
We have accommodated a wide variety of tastes among the students at Hualalai and have even served organic free range turkey franks on whole wheat rolls to please those that wanted franks. We try to be very flexible. Combine that with our chef's magic hands and tongue and you get success.
We would all love to see local schools move away from the USDA school lunch program and improve the quality of whats served at schools.
